Voltage

Electricity in Amsterdam and throughout The Netherlands is 230V. If you are bringing any appliances with you, make sure that they can operate at 220-240V, usually via a switch, otherwise you will need to bring or purchase a step-up transformer.

The voltage used to be 220V, but was raised by one volt per year to the European standard of 230V. In practical terms for the everyday user, there is no difference between an appliance operating at 220V, 230V or 240V.

Electricity also operates at a frequency of 50Hz (as opposed to 60Hz in USA for instance).

Plugs and sockets in Amsterdam and The Netherlands are European standard 2 pin, round. Converters can be found throughout the city but the best advice is to buy one before you depart your homeland, at the airport.
