Saunas
The real sauna experience seems to have passed by much of the English speaking western world.
In The Netherlands however, saunas are a Dutch institution, and locals - friends and colleagues alike, often visit saunas together in groups, both male and female freely mixing in shared facilities. And these facilities are not just for Dutch residents, tourists are welcomed.
Amsterdam is no different and below are featured two recommended saunas.
Art Deco Sauna
Herengracht 115 Opening Hours: Monday to Saturday noon-midnight, Sunday 1pm-6pm
Art Deco Sauna is the grand daddy of saunas in Amsterdam. Featuring beautiful decor set in relaxing surroundings, no clothes are allowed so leave your bathing suit at home. Facilities include dry and wet saunas, steam room, plunge pool and outdoor courtyard.
Facials and massage are also available but should be booked before visiting.
Art Deco Sauna caters for both men and women
Fenomeen
Eerste Schinkelstraat 14, 020 671 6780 Opening Hours: Every Day 1pm-11pm, Monday: women only, Thursday to Sunday: no smoking
Located towards the south of the Vondelpark, on the lower-West side of Amsterdam, Fenomeen may not be as grand as Art Deco Sauna, but nevertheless is not short on facilities including Finnish sauna, Turkish steambath, solarium, restroom, outside area, relaxing room, cold bath, cafeteria and massage room.
Various works of art also don the walls throughout this relaxing venue.
