I have stayed at Hotel Vijaya several times. If you've read my FREE Amsterdam hotel guide, you will know how highly I rate this hotel.
First of all, location. It is a mere five minutes brisk walk from Central Station, the gateway to Amsterdam. OK, a ten minute walk if you want to take a leisurely stroll. It is located very close to Warmoestraat which is perhaps the prime nightlife spot in Amsterdam. Here, or close by, you can find bars, coffeeshops and the red light district. But proximity alone is not enought to justify a stay there.
The staff at Hotel Vijaya have always made me feel welcome. They have a couple of docile cats - I'm more a dog person that a cat person but even I am endeared to them! Over the years, I have seen the same respectable staff running the hotel. There is a 24 hour concierge service and a locked front entrance through which you must be buzzed in. Drinks and snacks are also available at the concierge.
Included breakfast is standard but thoroughly edible and digestible fare - selection of continental meats and cheeses, eggs, jam, bread etc. No cereal or fried breakfast if that is what you're looking for but good enough for me.
Rooms are available for varying numbers of people in your party - a plus point is the large availability of well stocked single rooms. Each room in Hotel Vijaya boasts a radio, TV, toilet, sink and shower - whilst most twin and triple rooms in Amsterdam will boast that, few single rooms do. Hot water is plentiful and has never run out on me during my stays. Towels are changed daily as well.
Whether you prefer the cold or the heat, this place is good for both. There are wide open sash windows allowing the room to air out well. If you like to smoke (whatever you may be smoking, this is Amsterdam after all!) they do not mind - ashtrays are provided. If you prefer the heat, I can testify that the radiators maximum temperature is very hot! Of course, you can turn the radiator off if you wish to do so.
Concerning price, this is the best value for money in my opinion if you are looking for a room near the centre of Amsterdam that comes complete with mod cons such as toilet, shower and TV. I know of no other place for the price or less unless it lacks one of the above.
This may sound like a heck of a recommendation for a first hotel review on this site, but the proof is that I stay at Hotel Vijaya at least twice a year and it has become my favourite hotel.
